Crossways Infant School is an award winning community school in
Thornbury, South Gloucestershire, UK. With an intake of 60
pupils the school has two classes for each year from reception,
aged from 4, until year 2. For the area it serves Crossways
Infant School is in the unique position of providing an excellent
and wide ranging education specifically for infant age children,
and is celebrated not just by academic success but by the breadth
of the curriculum. We were very pleased to be judged amongst
the very best in the country by achieving a Grade 1 Outstanding
in every aspect by Ofsted; the BBC
featured the result on its web site.
This web site has been developed to act as a source of information
and support to the school community as well as prospective parents.
You'll find pages covering the school policies and details on the staff, as well
as photos and information for each class.
There's also a selection of publications and links to other sites that we have
found useful. All of which can be navigated to from the menu
at the top of each page.
We are always grateful to receive comments on the site, if
you should have any please use the e-mail address above, send
them to the school office or complete our site survey here.
Should you be interested in joining us in supporting the children's
learning we always welcome volunteer parents and careers and have
a vacancy and job board for more
permanent positions.
Parents and carers make a significant contribution through a parent
council, the friends of crossways infant PTA (FOCUS) and by helping
in class and around the school. All parent interaction is
welcomed and supported.
At Crossways we believe that the Infant years are vital ones in
a child's education. The overall aim of the school is to provide
a stimulating environment in a happy, caring and secure atmosphere
in which all the needs of each child are met. We hope that
all children will find success and satisfaction in their achievements.

Ofsted: we've done it again!!Yep Ofsted inspector Christine Gilbert wrote to the school near the end of term to let us know that her interim inspection indicates that the school's performance has been sustained since we were graded as Outstanding and so has deferred the next inspection.
Along with the recent confirmation that the Local Authority School Improvement Partner had reviewed school progress, and continues to support our Ofsted Outstanding rating, this is confirmation that CIS remains the best school in the area.
Due to reduced numbers in the area we still have places for next year starting in September 2010. Please contact the school office when we return in September for details and to arrange a personal visit.
Our pupils are encouraged to adopt a healthy and active lifestyle
and are aware of the importance of this. We teach children
to be responsible for their own behaviour and for the effect that
undesirable behaviour has upon their peers. Whilst the national
curriculum is an essential part of school life it is important to
provide the opportunity to gain additional experiences through extra
curricular activities; we run ball skills, dance classes, choir,
computer club, French club and gardening.
Our pupils have a voice through pupil council meetings as well
as formal and informal discussions. The pupils tell us that
they: feel safe, happy and enjoy school, consider they have a good
teacher, like the support staff, enjoy play based activities and
the opportunity to make choices about the curriculum in "planning
time" are good learners and have the capacity to be better
learners, feel they work hard and are making good progress, are
aware of the importance of a healthy lifestyle, are keen to participate
in physical activities, have high expectations of peer behaviour,
value friendships and believe it is important to care for others.
The school is a one storey building built in 1970 surrounded by
spacious grassed areas and playground. There are seven well
resourced classrooms as well as a central hall, a library,
well equipped ICT suite, an 'Elliot building' and a newly refurbished
secure room that can be hired out. We are also lucky to share
our buildings with the very successful First
Step pre-school and Kids
Klub provide before and after school care.
Enquiries to hire any of the rooms, including the hall, can be made via the school office.
Crossways Infant School has been ranked amongst the very best in the country. In their most recent report the OfSted inspectors said "This is an outstanding school whose motto, 'Standing
on Tiptoe', reflects its commitment to providing the very
best education possible for its pupils. Staff and governors
maintain a relentless focus on seeking ways to improve the
quality of pupils' learning. ... What makes Crossways
stand out from the crowd are its innovative and ground breaking
approaches to developing pupils' learning and their understanding
of how they learn. This results in outstanding achievement
and exceptionally high standards, not only in reading, writing
and mathematics, but in many other areas of the curriculum.
Standards in information and communication technology (ICT),
art and physical education (PE) are also very high."
The full report can be accessed on the Ofsted
web site. |
Merlin is the place where the children show case their work. It is on a separate site hosted by the Council but you can link
to it from the year group pages at the link bar at the top of the main school web site.
Merlin is an exciting development that will let parents and carers share what the children have been enjoying. There is an entry page for the
school and each year group has their own section.

The links will open in new windows.
